The Cybertipline
ALEXANDRIA, Va., Mar 11, 2002 (U.S. Newswire via COMTEX) -- In March 1998, Congress mandated that the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children
(NCMEC) develop a CyberTipline, an online mechanism for citizens to report sexual crimes against children.
On November 30th, 2009, the CyberTipline had received 760,319 reports.
"Thanks to the leadership and cooperation of Members of Congress, law
enforcement personnel worldwide, and especially those who report, the CyberTipline is working," remarked NCMEC President and CEO Ernie Allen. "It
provides a bridge for computer users who encounter child victimization to the law enforcement officers who investigate crimes against children."
Information reported to the CyberTipline is evaluated by NCMEC analysts
and provided to law enforcement for investigation and review, and, when appropriate, to the Internet Service Provider (ISP).
Federal law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Customs Service, and
the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, have secure access to the database of tips.
Since March 1998 over 9,000 reports have been submitted to the CyberTipline by the Dutch "Meldpunt Kinderporno".
